Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, accounting for approximately 30% of all our proteins, and is our dominant structural protein. Normal aging, chronic inflammation, chronic stress, nutritional deficiencies, UV radiation, and smoking can all decrease collagen production as well as degrade collagen structure. This leads not only to wrinkles, but osteopenia and osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, cardiovascular disease and decreased organ function, including heart, lungs and kidneys! A variety of studies show that supplementing with collagen can combat this, which is why the collagen supplement market is booming!

[Insert screeching-to-a-halt sound effect.] Unfortunately, as the demand increases for collagen supplements, the manufacturing of collagen has become an industrial process, complete with icky chemicals, proprietary enzymes, wonky added ingredients, and a general lack of transparency. So, on this week’s episode of The Whole View, Stacy and I discuss the science behind collagen, collagen myths, how collagen supplements are made, what we’ve switched to, and what questions to ask a company if you want to find out whether harsh solvents or acids are used to make the collagen you’ve been taking.
