On this episode of The Whole View podcast, Stacy and I continue on from last week’s Omicron episode and discuss how to prepare your body and mind in the event that you are exposed to, or contract this extremely contagious and infectious variant of the Covid-19 virus. Last episode we discussed why it is super dangerous to be calling this variant “mild”, and therefore, we cannot stress enough why we should not try to get this variant just to “get it over with”. So why should we not try to get it? The short answer is that we are still at a very real risk of long Covid, which is a mystery and has impacted millions of Americans over the last two years. I dive into the research on long Covid and what scientists have hypothesized as potential mechanisms for these long-lasting symptoms, including: persistent infection, micro clots, and a new autoimmune disease.

Long Covid is not simply a lingering cough but can present with a range of debilitating symptoms including impaired cognitive function, physical function, olfactory system function, and can cause long-term effects to organs including your heart and pancreas which can cause lifelong diabetes, blood pressure problems, and increased risk of stroke. So what are some ways we can help our body to be in the best form should we be exposed to Omicron? The studies suggest that supplementation of some key nutrients may help to reduce illness risk such as vitamin D (remember test, don’t guess with vitamin D levels – talk to your doctor for testing), magnesium, B12 and zinc. But some of our best strategies are still the tried and true: masking, distancing, getting vaccinated, getting boosted, exercising regularly, and getting good quality and quantity of sleep!
